We visited a resident of Vida Grange Dementia home to assess his seating needs. Vida Grange is a new nursing home development on the outskirts of Harrogate, built by Vida Healthcare, who are specialists in high-end dementia care.
The home is in a charming setting near the Crimple Valley, affording lovely views across the local countryside.
We were asked to specify seating for a resident who was finding his current seating uncomfortable.
The gentleman we assessed for seating wasn’t having his postural needs met. He was in an uncomfortable position slumped in the chair, which was the wrong size for him.
As he had advanced dementia this made it even more difficult for him to maintain an upright position. This was causing him and his family distress.
He needed something that would compensate for his inability to maintain a good posture and support him in an upright position in the chair.
As he was spending a lot of time each day in the chair, it would need to have good pressure relief to maintain his levels of comfort.
The solution we provided was a Lento Care Chair with manual tilt-in-space action. The handle at the back of the chair meant his carers could tilt the chair back, using the tilt in space to redistribute his weight and prevent the build-up of pressure.
The tilt in space function, along with supportive features of the chair, kept him in a good midline position, using gravity to centralise him in the chair and tilt him back while keeping his pelvis and hips in the right position.
The waterfall lateral back and high arms gave him good sideways support, stopping him from slumping to one side in the chair.
The Lento Care Chair was a resounding success, making him feel safe and secure in the chair, and free of any discomfort.
As an avid Liverpool fan, he chose a fabric colour of bright red, still flying the flag for Anfield from the comfort of his new chair!
